Intro to Smart Homes & Cities
One of the main applications of IoT in the home is heating and energy. This is particularly true of the UK as there is a government initiative incentivising suppliers to introduce smart metres. Steadily the public is getting on board with the idea of being able to control your heating from your smart phone; due home early from work and want the heating to kick in earlier than usual > adjust the temp if the day turns out to be sunnier than forecast.
IoT is far more than smart homes and connected appliances. The same technology can be scaled up to be a smart city solution.
On April 15, 2013, two homemade bombs were detonated near the finish line of the annual Boston Marathon Since then the City of Boston have implemented a security system based on the state of the art system in use in London. Thousands of cctv security cameras owned by the city have been connected to devices privately operated by businesses to create one inter-connected infrastructure of cameras recording real-time data which is also linked up to the emergency response services.
